The technology package of the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 is utterly unique. The new twelve-cylinder with 6.5 liters’ displacement and 515 kW / 700 hp brings together the ultimate in high-revving pleasure with astonishing low-end torque. Thanks to a dry weight of only 1,575 kilograms (3,472 lb), which is extremely low for this class of vehicle, the weight-to-power ratio stands at only 2.25 kilograms per hp (4.96 lb/hp). Even the fantastic 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration figure of just 2.9 seconds and the top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph) do not fully describe the Aventador’s extreme performance. And yet, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are down by around 20 percent compared with its predecessor, despite the considerable increase in power (+8%).

The ISR transmission is unique among road-going vehicles, guaranteeing the fastest shifting time (only 50 milliseconds) and a highly emotional shift feel, while the lightweight chassis with pushrod suspension delivers absolute handling precision and competition-level performance. The expressively-designed interior offers hi-tech features ranging from the TFT cockpit display with Drive Select Mode system. The Aventador will be built to the very highest quality standards in an all-new production facility in Sant’Agata Bolognese.

CELEBRATIONS BEGIN FOR THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE JAGUAR E-TYPE

The 50th anniversary year of Jaguar's iconic E-type got underway in London yesterday (Tuesday February 8th) when legendary test driver Norman Dewis, who this year celebrates his 91st birthday, and John Surtees, only man to win World championships on two wheels and four, unveiled a stunning 1961 E-type which has recently been restored.

The car has been loaned by Classic Motor Cars of Bridgnorth in Shropshire who approached the museum about having an example of the car on display to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

F1 Champion John Surtees, who travelled to the Jaguar factory at Brown's lane in Coventry to pick up his car said: "Up until 1961 people had associated motoring beauty with either Italy or Germany but here was a beautiful car which had been built and designed in the UK -it was a must have."

He added: "The E-type has the Jekyll and Hyde personality that every good sports car must have, fierce at one moment, and docile the next."

Standing in front of E-type 77 RW, Norman Dewis, Jaguar's test driver told journalists that he well remembered being on a test run in the car and getting a call asking him to "drop everything" and drive the car from Coventry to the Geneva motor show so that it could become a press car.

He added: "Coventry to Dover took me two hours and I completed the run to Geneva in just 11 hours I averaged 68mph - it was quite a drive. The E-type took the motoring world by storm and it was great to be its test driver and to be here today celebrating the E-type anniversary."

Also on special display just for the launch was the Jaguar Heritage Trust's E-Type 77 RW, which was one of the original press cars from 1961.

The E-type, manufactured by Jaguar between 1961 and 1974, and considered by many experts as one of the most beautiful cars of all time, became an icon of 1960s motoring with its revolutionary design and a combination of elegance, performance and competitive price.

Chassis No 94 will be on display at the Design Museum Tank until March 6th.

THE AGE OF ELECTRIC MOTORING IN EUROPE

The first regular shipment of 100% electric Nissan LEAFs bound for Europe arrived in North East England on 3rd February.

The 67 Nissan LEAFs aboard the ‘City of St. Petersburg', Nissan's brand new energy-saving car carrier for transporting vehicles in Europe, are destined for customers in the UK and Ireland and will be unloaded from the Port of Tyne as the carrier completes its maiden voyage.

"The arrival of the Nissan LEAF, the world's first affordable, all-electric car, in Europe is a landmark day for Nissan and European transport. The Nissan LEAF is a genuine alternative to petrol and diesel cars in terms of style, features, safety, performance and handling," said Simon Thomas, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Nissan International SA, Nissan's European headquarters.

"It is fitting that this first shipment of Nissan LEAFs is arriving on our new energy-saving car carrier, the City of St. Petersburg. We look forward to delivering these cars to the very first Nissan LEAF customers, who share our vision for an environmentally sustainable future for road transport," he added.

The City of St. Petersburg has a sleek and semi-spherical bow which reduces wind resistance by up to 50%, resulting in fuel reductions of up to 800 tonnes annually, equivalent to about 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The carrier will join the fleet of ships which export hundreds of thousands of vehicles from Nissan Sunderland Plant each year.

UK customers have been able to pre-order the Nissan LEAF since September 2010 ahead of deliveries starting in the coming weeks. Pre-orders for the Nissan LEAF, which is powered by an advanced lithium-ion battery, have reached more than 27,000 units globally. The zero-emission car is currently built in Japan, but will be manufactured in Sunderland from 2013, following the start of production of lithium-ion batteries for such cars at the plant in 2012.

A comprehensive charging network is currently under development in the UK. North East England alone will have 1,300 charge points by 2013, including quick chargers capable of refuelling a Nissan LEAF from when the empty warning light switches onto an 80% charge in just under 30 minutes. Nissan's network of EV dealers - currently 25 sites across the UK - will all be equipped with a quick charger.

Across the UK there are programmes under way to install around 9,000 charge points by 2013.

Nissan research has found that 80% of daily driving in Britain is below 30 miles. With the Nissan LEAF's ability to carry five passengers up to 109 miles (175 km) under the New European Driving Cycle, its arrival in Europe marks a significant development in the environmentally-friendly, cost efficient options available for motorists.

Exchange and Mart survey reveals greener motoring tops New Year resolution list

Every New Year comes with the dreaded resolutions to find a new job, join the gym and do more for world peace. According to a new survey* from ExchangeandMart.co.uk 37.5% of people made driving-related New Year's resolutions for 2011. Trading in the current car for a greener model tops this year's list of resolutions, showing that the environment is still a key issue for motorists.

"Motorists seem to find their driving resolutions easier to stick to than the usual promises of cutting out the cake or giving up smoking, with 55% keeping the motoring resolutions they made in 2010," says Michael Tang, Marketing Communications Manager at Exchange and Mart. "Most interestingly, of those vowing to make changes, 30% want to trade in their current vehicle for a greener model, and 30% are looking for a smaller model. In 2010, the same percentage of people planned to go for a greener car, but just 20% were on the lookout for a smaller model.

"Reducing mileage, last year's top of the chart with a massive 37%, has dropped to third place with 25% of people cutting down on journeys. This may suggest that motorists are looking for sustainable ways to be greener and cut costs, without the inconvenience of leaving the car at home. Trading in the gas-guzzler for a green machine is a cost effective and convenient way to save money and reduce your impact on the environment, and it looks like the trend will continue for some time to come."

UK SHOW DEBUT FOR NEW NISSAN GT- R AT AUTOSPORT INTERNATIONAL SHOW

Sports car fans heading for the PistonHeads Performance Car show, held within the Autosport International event, in Birmingham this month are set for a feast of Nissan horsepower.

The first treat is the opportunity to see the awesome new Nissan GT-R. Revised for 2011, it now packs a 530PS punch and produces 612Nm of torque. This is enough to power the supercar to 0-62mph in 3.0 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars in the world.

Besides more power, the enhanced GT-R is distinguishable by its new wheel design, LED daytime running lights, larger front brakes, improved air intakes, red engine cover and a revised interior. It is available only in one grade known simply as the GT-R but with two interior choices – Recaro black full leather seats with red flashes or premium with a leather and Alcantara seat trim – both available at no extra cost. The car on display at the show will have a Recaro Black interior with the new exterior colour for 2011, Daytona blue.

Sitting alongside the GT-R will be the latest versions of the 370Z Coupe and Roadster, both celebrating the 40th year of Nissan ‘Z’ cars in the UK. Producing 328PS from their 3.7-litre V6 engines, they have come a long way from the original 240Z which was first officially imported into the UK in August 1971 with a 150PS powerplant. Much of this iconic car’s character has been carried over to the latest incarnation 370Z though, including its front engine, rear wheel drive layout and its two seat driving experience. Even elements of the original styling can be seen in the bonnet and roof lines.

Show visitors going beyond Nissan’s own stand will be able to spot some even more extreme Nissans. Performance Tuners Sumo Power will be showing off their stunning FIA GT1 championship race winning GT-R which recently picked up the RAC tourist trophy. The second GT-R race car will be strutting its stuff in the ‘Fifth Gear Live Action Arena’ where spectators will be able to see, hear and smell the car in action. Drivers of both cars will be available for autographs at various times over the four days of the show.

Speed merchants still hungry for more power should seek out the most powerful car to ever wear the Nissan badge; John Bradshaw’s Z drag car puts out a whopping 2,000hp from an engine which uses the same V6 engine block as a standard 370Z. Dressed in its new livery of red and silver it can be seen at the show in hall 7 on stand number 7400.

ELEKTROBAY CHARGES BBC EV RUN FROM LONDON TO EDINBURGH

The availability of a £5,000 Government grant towards the purchase of a new electric vehicle (EV) from 4 January onwards has prompted BBC Breakfast correspondent Brian Milligan to embark on a 400-mile drive in an EV from London to Edinburgh. Milligan will recharge his EV at nine different roadside EV charging stations, seven of which are innovative Elektrobays, designed, manufactured and maintained by Brighton-based Elektromotive. The company has helped Milligan to plan his route with their innovative EB Connect networking software and has issued him with the necessary wireless access keys required for his epic journey.

The anticipated increase of EVs on UK roads in 2011, resulting from an influx of new production EVs coupled with the Government grant, is expected to highlight the growing need for a comprehensive nationwide charging infrastructure.

Milligan will begin his EV challenge on Monday 10 January from London and travel to nine separate charging point locations before reaching his final destination on Friday 14 January. Throughout the week Milligan’s progress will be followed by BBC Breakfast viewers.

“It will be interesting to see how Brian grapples with the practicalities of powering an EV over such a long distance,” comments Elektromotive Managing Director, Calvey Taylor-Haw. “At present, undertaking such a trip in an EV takes quite some planning, as recharging points are still relatively low in number and are concentrated in a few major cities. THE JAGUAR C-X75 COMES HOME

The show-stopping Jaguar C-X75 concept is now on display at the Jaguar Boutique in the Berkeley Hotel, London, where it will be available to view in the metal until New Years Eve.

This is the British public's first opportunity to see Jaguar's multi-award winning concept supercar in the UK.

After making its world debut at the Paris motor show, and becoming the star attraction at the Los Angeles motor show, the C-X75 is already turning heads in Knightsbridge as Londoners, tourists and even the odd celebrity stop to gaze at it through the window of the Jaguar Boutique.

"I'm really pleased we're able to put the C-X75 on display in such a prominent place in London for a short while," said design director Ian Callum. "We're tremendously proud of this Jaguar concept car and what it stands for, so it's great to be able to bring it to our customers in the UK."

The C-X75 concept is a celebration of 75 years of Jaguar. It is an electric supercar, capable of speeds in excess of 200mph, whose batteries are charged by two mini jet turbines mounted in the rear.

This sort of cutting-edge technology allows Jaguar to mix remarkably low carbon dioxide emissions – 29g/km CO2 – with seamless, groundbreaking performance, all in one stunning package.

ELECTRIC CAR REVOLUTION REVS UP FOR 2011

The Government drove the UK firmly into the fast lane of the electric and ultra-low emission car revolution today as Ministers unveiled nine trailblazing models that will be eligible for generous grants of up to £5,000.
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond and Business Minister Mark Prisk announced the milestone which could make 2011 the year of the electric car for the UK - and revealed five more regions that will be installing local charging points having successfully bid for a share of a £20m fund.

From January, the motoring map of the country will start to be redrawn as government and car industry work in partnership to give drivers a wide choice of clean, green transport.

The first nine cars to become eligible for eco-friendly car grants are: Mitsubishi iMiEV; smart fortwo electric drive; Peugeot iON; Citroen CZero; Nissan Leaf; Tata Vista EV; Toyota Prius Plug-in; Vauxhall Ampera and Chevrolet Volt. More will follow next year.

The grant will be available to motorists across the UK from 1 January 2011, reducing the cost of eligible cars by a quarter, up to a maximum of £5,000.

The Government is also encouraging a new network of electric vehicle recharging points in streets, car parks and commercial retail and leisure facilities as driving electric cars becomes a part of everyday life for pioneering British drivers. The successful bidding consortia in this second phase are based in: the Midlands; Greater Manchester; East of England; Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said:

"A few years ago, ultra-low emission cars with mass market appeal appeared just a pipe dream. Now they are a reality and we can have all the convenience of the car without all the carbon that normally goes with it.

"Government action to support affordable vehicles and more local charging points means we are on the threshold of an exciting green revolution - 2011 could be remembered as the year the electric car took off.

"The British public has in the past shown it's ready to embrace new technology and take practical steps to adopt a lifestyle kinder to the environment, so we could really be at the start of something big."

Business Minister Mark Prisk said:

"Today's news that motorists will be able to choose from at least nine cars under the consumer incentive scheme and that we are expanding the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles will further reinforce the message that the UK is Europe's leading producer of ultra low carbon vehicles."

Today's announcement further confirms the UK as a global front runner in the market for ultra-low emission cars and open for business for hi-tech green manufacturing. This builds on Nissan's decision to produce the Leaf in Sunderland and the work the Automotive Council is doing to improve the way Government works with industry.

JAGUAR XJ IS TOP GEAR LUXURY CAR OF 2010

Top Gear has named the Jaguar XJ as its Luxury Car of the Year 2010.


Writing in the most recent Awards Issue of Top Gear Magazine, Editor at Large Jason Barlow described the XJ as a “Blast from the future,” adding “rarely has a new car slackened so many jaws.”

The XJ is a landmark vehicle from a revitalised and more confident Jaguar. Since launch in May 2010, it has been extremely well received by customers and media alike and is fast becoming a multi-awarding winning model, having already scooped the Scottish Luxury Car of the Year and What Car? Luxury Green Car of the Year accolades.

BLUEBIRD FLIES AGAIN: NEW RECORD ATTEMPT

Don Wales, holder of the UK Land Speed Record for an electric car, announced today (Tuesday 9 November) that he will attempt to break his own electric record and exceed the outright record set by his grandfather, Sir Malcolm Campbell, in 1925 in the early spring of 2011.

Speaking after successfully completing the RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge in a hybrid car, Wales said: "I have held the record for over ten years and it's now looking very vulnerable. I want to set the UK record well beyond 150mph – the speed Sir Malcolm clocked in 1925. Ideally, I'd like to match his record of 1927 – 175mph."

The attempt is part of the Campbell family celebration year of the centenary of Sir Malcolm Campbell first christening a car Bluebird at Brooklands in 1911.

Don Wales and the Bluebird Electric Team set the current record of 139mph in August 2000 on Pendine Sands, Wales. They will return to Pendine Sands – the venue for Sir Malcolm's successful land speed record attempts in the 1920s – in spring of 2011.

Wales also has plans to attempt a new world land speed record for a battery car and has his sights set on 500mph, and is currently evaluating several design options. He says: "At last the world is making real progress with electric vehicles as a viable alternative to the internal combustion engine. Ten years ago electric vehicles were unheard of in the news, and people couldn’t understand the importance of electric car technology. Now there's a whole new generation of electric road cars in production. The UK is a world leader in automotive technology, particularly in the cutting edge and highly competitive field of motor sport, and Land speed record projects have a history of boosting technological developments which is why I'm planning a world beating battery car”.

Project Director Martin Rees said "Don's ambition to be the fastest in the world is a goal we are all working hard to achieve and his recent speed record breaking exploits, and those we achieved in the electric Bluebird ten years ago, are testament to his undoubted dedication and commitment to excellence". Rees added, "Taking the car back to Pendine next Spring with improved drive and bodywork will be another chapter in the Campbell and Wales and Pendine story.”

Don Wales, who is the nephew of Donald Campbell – another famous record breaker – has clearly inherited the quest for speed. In May this year he twice broke the world land speed record for a lawnmower leaving it at 87.833mph. He also holds the world record for a steam powered car (148mph) as a member of Charles Burnett III's British Steam car team at Edwards Airforce base in August 2009.

The inaugural RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge will showcase to the latest electric, hybrid and low-emission passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Royal Automobile Club trophies will be awarded in different categories for the most energy efficient vehicles that have completed the 60-mile Brighton to London run starting in Brighton at 8am. These future cars will be on display in Regent Street from 12.30am till 4pm.

Former British and World Rally Champion, Paddy Hopkirk, drove to victory in the Mini Cooper in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally. On Saturday 6th November Paddy will be back behind the wheel of a MINI; this time a MINI Cooper D – the brand’s most efficient model, emitting just 99g/km CO2 and achieving an impressive 74.3 mpg (on the combined cycle).

Prodrive boss, David Richards CBE, will drive MINI’s 100% electric powered car – MINI E. As well as being a former British and World Rally Champion, David Richards is today best known for his more recent successes in motorsport. His latest venture will see MINI returning to the World Rally Championship with the latest model – the MINI Countryman in 2011.

Paddy and David will drive the differently powered MINIs in a 60-mile challenge. Each will be trying to be the most efficient in terms of energy used by their respective cars.

David Richards said “The MINI E is an incredible car and this event will highlight its amazing versatility. I am really looking forward to the event and competing against Paddy to see who can be most efficient. However, I will have to dampen down my competitive spirit, as will Paddy, to ensure we get the most miles out of the MINIs to take the trophy in each of our classes.”

DONINGTON LAUNCHES HISTORIC FESTIVAL

The future of one of Britain’s greatest race circuits, Donington Park, has been spectacularly confirmed by the launch of its own annual Historic Festival – a new venture which aims to rival the very best UK and international historic motorsport events. The inaugural Festival will be held on the weekend of 30 April to 1-2 May 2011.

To help establish the Donington Historic Festival as a showcase for the very best historic racing, Donington has teamed up with well-known race organiser Duncan Wiltshire, who will be responsible for running the event from 2011 onwards.

Says Kevin Wheatcroft, the circuit’s owner, “After a period of uncertainty, Donington Park’s future as a race circuit is now assured. The circuit has a fabulous history that is an important part of British heritage, from the days of the pre-War Silver Arrows GP cars right through to modern times. The launch of the Donington Historic Festival is one example of how we intend the circuit not only to survive, but to thrive in the years to come.”

As the son of Tom Wheatcroft, who bought the long-disused and derelict race circuit in 1971 and reopened it for racing in 1977 thanks to huge personal investment, Kevin Wheatcroft is carrying on a family tradition by honouring Donington’s history.

Meanwhile Duncan Wiltshire, who will be running the Festival in partnership with Donington, believes that the event has something fresh to offer the historic racing world.

“The Donington Historic Festival aims to fill a very clear hole in the calendar,” states Wiltshire, “by placing the needs and wishes of owners, drivers and knowledgeable enthusiasts at its heart. This will be a truly prestigious annual event, inviting only the very best race series and the highest-calibre cars and drivers. We aim to delight serious historic motorsport fans, and the owners of the most original, most fascinating and most important cars, by focusing on the pure motor racing experience, over and above any add-on attractions.”

WHAT STAR SIGN IS YOUR CAR?

Just a consideration of all the things that might affect the car you drive and the way it behaves ... if the stars can cause people to behave in strange ways then surely they might just affect your car in similar ways.
You can often find the build month for your car on a sticker inside the driver's door and you can, if you make the effort, find out whole lot more from the VIN. But in this instance the build month is enough to make a start at least, and gives you two possible star signs for your car, and it could be fun to decide whether your car is, for instance, Aries or Taurus by the way it behaves.


Aries - March 21 to April 20

People (and cars) born under the sign of Aries are supposed to be hot headed, quick tempered, impatient, impulsive and impossible. They are reputedly independent and hungry for new adventure, energetic and disorganised.

Does that ring any bells? Is your car occasionally known to pull away faster than you expected? Is there a tendency for rubbish to gather in the back and if there is dirt on the road does you car seem to gather more of it than you next door neighbour's? Could be you are driving an Aries car.

Taurus - April 21 to May 21

The thing about Taurus is that bulls, while strong, are also stubborn, slow and stroppy. They have a fondness for food and can't get enough of the best things in life. They do, however, strive to be the best they can and they can be trusted to always do their best.

So there it is. Slow to accelerate and a bit of a premium gas guzzler but reliable and good to go if treated right.

Gemini - May 22 to June 21

A two in one package, full of contradictions and mood swings and inclined to revel in their own individuality Gemini folk are often guilty of being fickle and superficial. They sometimes tire easily and faced with the long haul occasionally just give up. They are however great company and will liven up any social situation.

If your car has great personality but occasionally seems sluggish for no apparent reason it could be that you have a star twin in your garage.

Cancer - June 22 to July 23

Soft, soppy, good natured, gentle and devoted to their families is just one side of the crab. The other is the hard shell and sharp claws that come into play when when a particular line is crossed. They love to please others and are inclined to martyrdom.

Cancerians find it hard to work with those with whom they do not share a personal bond of mutual understanding ... so perhaps if you suspect you are harbouring a crabby car you should pat the bonnet every morning and always say thank you when you park him/her up at night!

Leo - July 24 to August 23

Brave, bold and undeniably classy Leos are also slightly scary and a tad unpredictable. They, however, always appear attractive, calm and capable and more inclined to be a pussy cat. Beware that growly, prowly, edgy side though.

Does that always beautiful machine parked in your driveway sometimes refuse start for no obvious reason? Is it all elegant magnificence until you put the foot down and vroom off in a stylish cloud of dust? You have a lion and not a tiger in your tank - take care.

Virgo - August 24 to September 23

The contradiction about Virgo is that it is not a symbol of virginity but of fecundidty and this is a sensual sign whose members are pleasure-loving and like to live life to the full. They are also very tidy, law abiding with a slight lean towards pickiness.

What does this mean in terms of four wheels? A joyful, usually trouble free, drive in a car it seems impossible to mess up.

Libra - September 24 to October 23

Indecisive and reputedly slightly dithering Librans are actually famous for their charm. They are affectionate but quarrelsome and argumentative and they love nothing better than playing Devil's Advocate. They will accept imbalance but only if it is imbalance in their favour and they can see both sides of an argument.

Don't get frustrated by this car ... and don't show that you are irritated if all is not going well. Librans will dig in and get stubborn and you might find that you are, literally, getting nowhere.

Scorpio - October 24 to November 22

The sign with a sting in its tail. Scorpios are accused of being secretive with a tendency to nurse grudges and they are also supposedly full of anti-social habits including a tendency to be rude. Plus, traditionally, they are sex mad!

Actually they are not rude, just honest, and they are really quite forgiving and sensitive. They are shocked by other people's prissy attitudes to life and living and sometimes inadvertently shock others by their open responses. This is the zodiacal jackpot. A Scorpio car should be easy to drive regardless of your own skill but with a very useful and sometimes surprising "hidden" sporty side.

Bright, breezy, bouncy Sagittarians love competition, are full of energy and enthusiasm and see everyone as their friend. These half horse people want everything to be perfect and are so surrounded by serendipity that they often push their luck to the max. They hate half measures.

PLUG-IN CAR GRANT ENCOURAGES SAFER VEHICLES



RoadSafe supports the stringent standards set for the Plug-In Car Grant, which will offer motorists up to £5000 to buy qualifying electric, plug-in or hydrogen fuelled cars.

To be eligible, cars must be crash tested and meet the same safety standards as regular internal combustion vehicles. Many of these already have higher safety standards than the tests require. They will also have to meet minimum range and performance criteria.



RoadSafe director Adrian Walsh said, "It is quite right that plug-ins meet the same safety criteria as other cars. We fully support this government initiative, which encourages so much innovation, led by the auto industry, to create safer, greener cars."



The safety standards will set electric cars apart from quadricycles, which only have to meet the same standards as three wheeled motorbikes. Government hopes the incentive will bring the ideal of mass-market electric vehicles closer to reality.

GOVERNMENT PLEDGES £24 MILLION ELECTRIC CAR INVESTMENT



The Government is to invest £24 million in developing electric vehicles has been welcomed by Friends of the Earth, but the campaigning charity warned that more must be done to cut the transport sector's massive contribution to climate change.

Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond has pledged the cash to fund the development of new engines, technology and infrastructure that will eventually enable more motorists to use electric vehicles.



Mr Hammond said today that he wants the current Government to be 'the greenest ever', and hopes the investment will both reduce the carbon emissions from car travel and provide a timely boost to this growth industry.



Friends of the Earth Transport Campaigner Richard Dyer said:



"Electric cars can help reduce carbon emissions from transport and Government support for this new industry is welcome - however, these vehicles won't do enough on their own to cut transport's contribution to climate change.



"Furthermore, electric cars are only as green as the power they use.



Ministers must ensure that more of our electricity comes from renewable sources.



"The Government must rapidly cut carbon emissions from transport if it is to be the greenest Government ever.



"More than half of all car journeys are under five miles - the Government must support councils to introduce local schemes that will encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport for these short journeys.



"Bold policies are urgently needed to tackle these emissions."

"However, we are on the brink of a technological revolution that will transform the way we see motoring in the 21st century allowing the benefits that the private car delivers without destroying the planet in the process."

In line with the Coalition Agreement commitment to mandate a national recharging network, guidance has also been released to the 15 places interested in bidding for the second round of the Plugged-In-Places infrastructure programme. This sets out in more detail what we want from these projects to support our decision-making on a national recharging network.

Business Minister Mark Prisk said:

"The winning consortia are all exciting examples of the breadth and depth of the UK's technical capabilities in low carbon vehicles.

"Collaboration between UK-based vehicle manufacturers, supply chain companies and academia will help Britain become one of the leading centres for the design, development and manufacture of ultra-low carbon vehicles.

"All of these projects had to demonstrate a credible route to market. This is about real business opportunities and high-tech jobs being created from the move to a low carbon economy."

TOP GEAR'S STIG REVEALED AS BEN COLLINS

The BBC has lost a legal fight to stop publication of a book which reveals the identity of Top Gear's driver The Stig.


The High Court in London refused to grant the BBC an injunction blocking the publication by HarperCollins of an autobiography of former Formula Three driver Ben Collins.

The book, called The Man In The White Suit, claims Mr Collins is the mystery driver on the BBC Two show.

The Stig is famous for his racing overalls and dark-visored helmet. His identity has long been a closely-guarded secret on Top Gear - one of the BBC's most popular shows in the UK and around the world.

Last week, HarperCollins said it would "vigorously defend" its right to publish the book, adding it was "disappointed that the BBC has chosen to spend licence fee payers' money to suppress this book".

However Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman attacked the publisher, writing on the Top Gear website that the BBC had a right to protect Stig's anonymity "from a bunch of chancers" who were "hoping to cash in on it".

LONDON’S READY TO GO ELECTRIC

Last week the first London consumers taking delivery of their smart fortwo electric drives, as part of the UK’s biggest electric vehicle trial. Owners of Eco Age, an ethical store, design consultancy & green hub; Livia Firth and Nicola Giuggioli received the keys from motoring broadcaster and self-confessed electric vehicle fan, Quentin Willson.

Nicola Giuggioli, CEO at Eco Age; "For us, at Eco Age to be part of the smart electric drive trials is amazing and has such a great synergy with our business. The smart electric drive is the perfect city car, you can park it anywhere and it has zero-emissions so we can drive around guilt-free. I can't wait to see the face of our clients when we arrive for our eco surveys in our smart electric drive."

Quentin Wilson, motoring journalist and broadcaster comments: “The fact that Mercedes-Benz, the people who invented the car, say that the future of driving is with the advent of cars like the smart electric drive, is a monster milestone for electric vehicles.”

Funded by the Government’s Technology Strategy Board, the nationwide trial is the first of its kind with over 340 vehicles being trialled on the UK roads. The programme sees 60 smart electric drives exclusively tested by residents in London and the South East for 12 months. A further 40 will be trialled by residents in the West Midlands.

David Bott, Director of Innovation Programmes at the Technology Strategy Board said: "It’s great to see the smart fortwo electric drive being handed over to the first drivers. This London based experiment is part of a much larger UK–wide trial funded by the Technology Strategy Board and the Department for Transport. Low carbon vehicles are being put into the hands of real drivers in eight different projects. Vehicle performance and user behaviour is being monitored by computers in over 340 cars and data from trials across the UK will be collated and published in an act of open innovation designed to support the development of Low Carbon Vehicle technology”

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said: “We are now on the brink of an exciting era of cleaner, greener electric motoring. London is already taking steps to ensure drivers in the capital will be able to embrace this new technology and plug in with confidence.”

The handover coincides with the publication of the smart Plugged-In report, commissioned to understand the UK perceptions around electric vehicles. The report reveals that the London consumer is ready to embrace the electric revolution with about two-thirds of consumers stating that they’re willing to consider an electric vehicle if the charging infrastructure is improved.
